Online or In-Person Counseling: Which Fits Your Needs?

Choosing between an office visit and a video session is about more than convenience. Privacy, your needs, technology, location, and your own preferences all matter. You can discuss those factors before committing to a format.

What does the research show?

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis compared therapist-guided remote and in-person cognitive behavioral therapy in 54 randomized trials involving adults. It found moderate-certainty evidence of little or no difference in effectiveness on the primary outcomes studied.

The finding concerns therapist-guided CBT in the populations and conditions included in those trials. It does not establish that every online program, every therapy approach, or counseling for every child is interchangeable with office care. An individual assessment still matters.

Consider where you can speak privately

An office can provide a separate setting away from household activity. Telehealth removes the trip, but you still need an appropriate place to talk. Think about who may overhear, interruptions, and whether you can focus for a full session.

For video care, ask how to connect, check your device and internet connection, and agree on what to do if the call drops. If you cannot find a private place, discuss that with the counselor before the appointment.

Compare your practical needs

There is no need to choose based on what you think you should prefer. Bring your questions to the initial call.

  • Would traveling to an office create a scheduling difficulty?
  • Can I speak freely at home or another private location?
  • Am I comfortable communicating by video?
  • Does my plan cover this clinician and service in my location?
  • If care is for a child or couple, who needs to be present?
