Getting started

What to Expect at Your First Counseling Appointment

You do not need to have the perfect words before contacting a counselor. Your first appointment is a place to begin explaining what has been difficult and what you would like to be different. A little preparation can make the practical side of starting feel less uncertain.

Start with a conversation about fit

At Mathews Family Counseling LLC, initial appointments are scheduled by phone. Call 440-201-4841 for a free 15-minute consultation to discuss general concerns, availability, payment, and whether the services fit your needs. You can ask questions before deciding to schedule.

A consultation is different from a full intake. If you leave a voicemail, include your name, callback number, and a suitable time to reach you. Avoid leaving detailed clinical information. Your appointment is not reserved until it is confirmed.

What you may discuss during intake

The first visit gives you and your counselor a chance to discuss your concerns, relevant history, and goals. You can also ask about confidentiality, its limits, and how counseling will work. Tell the counselor if a question is confusing or difficult to answer; you can talk about how to approach it.

  • What led you to seek support now?
  • What would you like to handle differently in daily life?
  • What support or coping strategies have helped before?
  • What questions do you have about the counseling process?

Your working relationship matters

A large meta-analysis found an association between the quality of the therapeutic alliance and outcomes in adult psychotherapy. This means collaboration and the working relationship deserve attention; it does not prove that feeling comfortable alone causes improvement or that every therapist is right for every person.

Consider whether you feel listened to and can discuss goals openly. It is reasonable to ask how progress will be reviewed or to say when an approach does not feel helpful.

Prepare the practical details

Before the visit, confirm your office address or telehealth instructions, required paperwork, and payment arrangements. Standard sessions are 50 minutes, and the standard self-pay rate is $125. Insurance benefits depend on your specific plan. Ask about any intake-specific arrangements when scheduling.

In-person offices are in Kinsman and Cortland, Ohio. Eligible clients may request online care while located in Ohio, Indiana, or Minnesota. Bring a few notes if useful, but there is no need to rehearse your story. The first step can simply be explaining where you are starting.
